How to Apply for PAN Card?

Application for the PAN card can be made online at the website of the NSDL or UTIITSL or by applying at the district level agencies of PAN. Customers can also made applications for allotment of new PAN, and modification or correction of information. For the new PAN, you require to fill and submit the form 49A.

There are various methods to get duplicate PAN card in case, when an entity misplaces or loses the PAN card. NRIs, foreigners and Indians all can get PAN, but the process and forms may different for all of these entities.

Application forms for reprint of PAN and new PAN are different. With regard to PAN, when an individual makes any of the applications mentioned above, she/he could track the status of PAN application through the acknowledgement number given by NSDL.

You can apply for a PAN card via the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) and UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL). You can submit applications for PAN card either online or offline.

Documents Required for PAN Card

The PAN card applicant needs to furnish the documents like identity proof and address proof. This information is verified by the NSDL from their central database. When the information furnished is incomplete or incorrect, then the PAN application is rejected.

PAN Card Application Forms

For a PAN Card, there are two types of forms.

PAN Application Form 49A for Indian Citizens

For all the Indian citizens, regardless of the fact that they are the residents of India or not, the form 49A is an application for PAN card. NRIs can also use this form for applying the PAN card. Form 49A is also needs to be submitted by the trusts, local bodies, partnership firms, NGOs (non-government organisations), firms and companies for applying a PAN card.

Minors and students can also submit the form 49A for applying a PAN card.

PAN Application Form 49AA for Foreign Nationals

Those foreign nationals who are paying tax in the India requires to submit the form 49AA. Association of persons registered outside India, Body of Individuals, trusts, firms, and Limited Liability companies needs to submit the form 49AA signed and dully filled in when they apply for a new PAN card for tax related purposes in India.

NRE (Non-Resident Entity) and OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) will apply for a new PAN card by using this form. Those entities who are applying for a new PAN card needs to submit the form 49AA will also require to submit their PIO cards/OCI/passport apart from their statements of bank accounts from their resident country as identity proof and address proof.

Step by Step Process to Apply for PAN Card Offline

  • Ensure that you have a passport size photograph, and photocopies of address proof and identity proof. You can use Voter ID and Passport as proof of ID. For proof of address, you can select any one from the following documents: -
  • Electricity bill, Telephone bills (postpaid or landline), address proof letter from your employer, six months bank account statement, and Passport.
  • The next step is to download the PAN application form from the website and take a printout of this form. Download Form 49A
  • By using a Black ball point pen, fill the form with appropriate information.
  • Paste your photograph and sign in the box below the photograph.
  • Attach self-attested photocopies of your ID and Address proof.
  • Submit the form and supporting documents to the NSDL office along with the processing fee.
  • You can pay the fee via demand draft in favour of ‘NSDL-PAN’ payable at Mumbai.
  • You require to mention “APPLICATION FOR PAN---N—Acknowledgement Number” superscripted on the application envelope.
  • You need to send this application to:

    Income Tax PAN Services Unit,
    NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited,
    5th floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341,
    Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony,
    Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016

  • After successful processing of the application, PAN will be generated and sent to the applicant residential address.

Step by Step Process to Apply for PAN Card Online

Apply for PAN Card Online through NSDL Website

  • To apply for a new PAN, you require to open the website of the NSDL
  • Choose the Application type – New PAN for Indian Citizens, foreign citizens or change / correction in existing PAN data.
  • Choose your category – individual, association of persons, body of individuals etc.
  • You need to fill in the necessary information like name, date of birth, email address and your mobile number in the form.
  • After submitting this form, you will receive a message related to the next step.
  • You require to click on the button “Continue with the PAN Application Form”.
  • It will redirect you to a new page where you require to submit your digital e-KYC.
  • In the next part of the form, you require to enter your personal information.
  • Also, enter your contact and other information in the next part of the form.
  • Input your area code, AO type, and other information in this part of the form.
  • Document submission and declaration is the last part of the form.
  • Now you will view your whole form to make corrections, if any. Click on the “Proceed” button, if you don’t want to perform any changes.
  • It will redirect you to the payment section where you have to make payment either via demand draft or via credit card/debit card/net banking.
  • After you make the payment, you will receive the acknowledgement form with the 15 digits acknowledgement slip.
  • You require to print this acknowledgement form.
  • Affix two recent passport size photographs in the space given on the acknowledgement form.
  • You require to enclose all the self-attesting documents mentioned in the form with demand draft (if payment was not performed online) and acknowledgement form.
  • You need to post the envelope containing all the documents to the address of the NSDL written below: -

    Income Tax PAN Services Unit,
    NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited,
    5th floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341,
    Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony,
    Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016

  • You require to label the envelope as ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN— N-Acknowledgement Number’.
  • After receipt of application, you will receive an email.

Apply for PAN Card Online through UTIITSL Website

UTIITSL is a government agency which has handling issues related to PAN application.

  • For this you need to visit the official website of the UTIITSL.
  • The next step is to click at the left side on the option “Apply as an Indian Citizen/NRI”.
  • Then in the middle, click on the option “Apply for new PAN Card (Form 49A)”.
  • You need to enter essential information in the form 49A such as name, address, father’s name etc.
  • After you fill in the necessary details, you need to click on the button “validation”.
  • The next step is to click on the button “Submit”.
  • The application will display a verification screen.
  • Here you need to check, whether the information you provide is correct or not.
  • The next step is to make payment for PAN application processing.
  • PayU and Billdesk are the two options of payment gateways which are offered to customers for making the payment.
  • To make the payment customers can also have the option of net banking, debit card or credit card.
  • After payment is successful, confirmation for payment is sent and a receipt is generated which applicant can print for using in future.
  • If the payment is not successful, then the concerned message will be shown on the screen. The applicant can either retry again or select to cancel the payment.
  • After payment is successful, applicant print the form. He/She needs to paste two recent passport size photographs on this form and requires to sign the application form.
  • The applicant needs to attach copies of the supporting documents like identity proof, age proof and address proof with this signed and updated form.
  • You need to send this form to your nearest UTIITSL office. The UTIITSL PAN processing offices are situated in all the four metropolitan cities of India like Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi.
  • You can track the status of PAN application through the coupon number furnished by the UTIITSL after your PAN application form submission.
  • For correction of the status of PAN application and reprint you can use the existing PAN number for tracking purpose.
