What Is BIFMA Certificate?

BIFMA stands for business and institutional furniture’s manufacturers association. BIFMA was founded in 1973 in order to develop standards for institutional or office furniture’s. These standards are accepted and implemented worldwide by most of the big furniture giants. This organization is made to develop standards for furniture quality & safety worldwide.

Big companies dealing in manufacturing of institutional or office furniture apply for BIFMA certificate which ensures that the furniture manufactured by the company is of good quality, safe to use and comply with all BIFMA standards.

BIFMA certificate is given to a furniture manufacturing company after testing and inspecting the quality of their furniture. If the quality of the furniture is up to the mark and meets all the standards developed by BIFMA, company is rewarded with BIFMA certificate.

Role of Business and Institutional Furniture’s Manufacturers Association

There are different roles performed by BIFMA –

BIFMA develops, maintains and publishes standards for institutional or office furniture as well as safety. It ensures good quality furniture and safety worldwide.

BIFMA participates in the formation of international furniture product standards.

BIFMA educates the customers by telling them the significance of standards.

BIFMA is created to save the human as well as environmental health from the impact of bad quality furniture products.

Levels of BIFMA certification

BIFMA established certain criteria for the companies involved in manufacturing institutional or office furniture’s to mark them on a specific scale on the basis of their performance in these 4 areas –

  1. Materials
  2. Energy & atmosphere
  3. Human & ecosystem health
  4. Social responsibility

Every furniture manufacturer receives points from BIFMA in these 4 areas on the basis of manufacturing facility and organization as a whole. Based on total points, manufacturer will earn one of the three levels of certification –

  1. 32-44 points – Level 1 certification
  2. 45-62 points – Level 2 certification
  3. 63-100 points – Level 3 certification
