What is FSSAI Food License?

FSSAI food license is a mandatory requirement for every food business operator (FBO) involved in business of supplying food items. Before starting your business operations, it is necessary for all eligible food operators like manufacturers, retailers, storage units, distributors, transporters, and petty hawkers to apply for FSSAI registration or FSSAI food license. This license is issued by food safety & standards authority of India (FSSAI). The validity of this food license ranges from 1 year to 5 years. It is mandatory for the registered food business operators to operate their businesses legally and in accordance with FSSAI rules & regulations.

FSSAI Renewal

If FSSAI Registration is important, renewal is also essential. You must go for FSSAI license renewal 30 days before the expiry of your existing food license. In case you miss the deadline of food license renewal, you need to pay a penalty of Rs 100 per day for each day till the time you delay the payment. Not only this, your FSSAI food license will be considered as expired and you need to apply for a fresh license if you want to restart your business again. Therefore, it is advisable that you must renew your food license on time in order to avoid fines & penalties.

Types of FSSAI License Renewal

There are 3 types of FSSAI license renewal –

Basic FSSAI License Renewal

Food business operators falling under basic registration criteria having turnover of less than 12 Lakh needs to apply for Basic FSSAI license renewal by submitting “FSSAI License Renewal Form A”. The FSSAI license fee for basic FSSAI license renewal varies from Rs 100 to Rs 500 depending on the number of years you are applying for.

State FSSAI License Renewal

Food business operators falling under state license criteria having turnover between 12 Lakhs to 20 Crores needs to apply for state FSSAI license renewal by submitting “FSSAI License Renewal Form B”. The FSSAI license fee for state FSSAI license renewal varies from Rs 2000/Rs 3000/Rs 5000 (For 1 year) to Rs 10000/Rs 15000/Rs 25000 (For 5 years).

Central FSSAI License Renewal

Food business operators falling under central license criteria having turnover above Rs 20 Crores needs to apply for central FSSAI license renewal by submitting “FSSAI License Renewal Form C”. The FSSAI license fee for central FSSAI license renewal varies from Rs 7500 to Rs 37500 depending on the number of years you are applying for.

FSSAI License Renewal Procedure

There are two procedures for FSSAI license renewal –

FSSAI License Renewal Online Procedure

In order to apply FSSAI license renewal online, you need to follow the below mentioned steps –

  • Create your user ID and password for FSSAI registration (If applying online).
  • In case already registered online, process your application by uploading the relevant documents online.
  • After successful application submission, an application reference number is generated by which you can easily track your application status online.
  • The application reference number generated will only be valid for 30 days. In case you cross the deadline, the generated reference number will expire.

FSSAI License Renewal Offline Procedure

In order to apply FSSAI license renewal offline, you need to follow the below mentioned steps –

  • Renew your license offline by filling form A for basic license, Form B for state license and Form C for central license.
  • Attach a self-attested declaration complying with the regulations of food safety and standards act.
  • In the next step, the application is received by the concerned authority and examined as per FSSAI rules & regulations.
  • If the examination officer is satisfied with the renewal application, he will carry forward the application along with the inspection report.
  • FSSAI renewal license will be issued within 60 days of submission of application. In case it is not issued in 60 days, continue your business operations without the renewal as it is the responsibility of FSSAI to issue renewal license as early as possible.

Documents required for Basic FSSAI Food License

  • Recent passport size photograph of the applicant
  • PAN card of the applicant
  • Identification proof of the applicant (Aadhaar card, Voter ID card, Passport etc.)
  • Address proof of the applicant (Voter ID card, Passport, water bill, electricity bill, Telephone bill, Gas bill, Rent agreement etc.)
  • Copy of property papers (if owned)
  • Copy of rent agreement & NOC (If rented)

Documents required for State or Central Food FSSAI License

  • List of proprietor/directors/partners/executive society members with their complete address along with the contact details
  • Recent passport size photograph of the applicant
  • PAN card of the applicant
  • Identification proof of the applicant (Aadhaar card, Voter ID card, Passport etc.)
  • Address proof of the applicant (Voter ID card, Passport, water bill, electricity bill, Telephone bill, Gas bill, Rent agreement etc.)
  • Copy of property papers (if owned)
  • Copy of rent agreement & NOC (If rented)
  • MOA/AOA/Partnership deed of the firm or certificate copy obtained under the Co-operative act (In case of cooperatives)
  • Document of E-code issued by Directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT)
  • Form IX nomination of persons along with the board resolution

Compliance Check for FSSAI Food License Renewal Application Status

When you apply for renewal of FSSAI license, food safety officer from FSSAI visits your registered premises to examine your premises on the basis of compliance & regulations. The visiting food safety officer tests your premises on the basis of agreement, product quality, food preparation technique and working provisions of the operators. There are 4 FBO’s compliance levels on which every food business operator is tested –

  • Compliant – When Food business operators are compliant with FSSAI rules and regulations, they are considered as compliant.
  • Non-Compliant – When Food business operators are non-compliant with FSSAI rules & regulations, they are considered as Non-compliant.
  • Partially compliant – When food business operators are partially compliant with FSSAI rules & regulations, they are considered as partially compliant.
  • Not applicable/Not observed – If the food is not being checked due to any reason or the premises are closed, it will be considered under the category of not applicable/not observed.
